Best Vacation Deals
By spode. Filed in Vacation and Travel |If you want to have a really magic vacation, we’ll recommend you a really magic borough. Thanks to a rarity of the place and beauty of architecture Mont Saint-Michel is one of the main sights of France. It is a rocky islet, the perimeter of which is not more then one kilometer, rises on 80 metres over the sea.
Mont Saint- Michel is the powerful granite rock crowned with a monastery and an enormous cathedral, devoted to Saint Michael. Here emerald green sea coast begins (don’t confuse with Azure!), it is the Mecca for silent and luxurious rest.
In the Middle ages people have decided to settle on this rock, surrounded with water and sand, and pray there to God and Saint Michael.
Mont Saint-Michel is a place of pilgrimage of West European Christians. Sick people hope for a miracle, the religious ones pray for absolution and fulfillment of hopes.
As the legend has it, this abbey, built on a granite rock, separated from the land by water in the time of rising tide, was founded in the VII century by a bishop of the city at command of Archangel Michael. The island made comfortable by monks, represents today the real reserve of the Middle Ages. La Merveille (from French “miracle”) is the three-level building built in Gothic style, which is the most beautiful part of an architectural ensemble of a monastery. About 200 people live in the fortress nearby, they are basically monks and attendants.
The time when the abbey was the centre of monks pilgrimage, dreaming to spend the rest of their life in a holy place, became a thing of the past. Nowadays, its magic attraction involving millions of tourists, coming here from every corner of the globe to see this wonderful island, to walk on streets of ancient small town, to go down by stairs leading to the sea and to admire the well-known rising tide. If you are looking for something special, this place is for you, because it is a great source of a positive energy. Small streets are very narrow and entirely speckled with small restaurants, mini-hotels and souvenir shops. The narrowest street, which has its own name, is 55 centimeters wide.
The schedule of its tides during a year is in a small book, which you can buy in shops with magazines or (this is curiously enough) in fish stores. It is called “Annuaire des marées” and costs €1, 70. You must have it, because tides can be seen every day at different time.
The French consider Mont Saint-Michel and its cove “the eighth miracle of the world”, and Europeans say that it is a «miracle of the Western Europe».
Mont Saint- Michel is designated by UNESCO as World Heritage Site.
