Pondering what makes people want to go on vacation and what they hope to get out of the experience.

No matter what the destination or venue, vacations are the substance that holds the world together. Well, not really, but we all look forward to the days of relaxation away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. We mark it on our calendars and count down the days until we can experience a world away from our world and let the cares of our lives fade away, even if just for a little while.
Why do we love vacations so much? As people we love to escape once in a while and see reality away from the mundane day to day. People see a vacation as a way to de-stress and unwind. Working at a job, especially a stressful one can steal our energy and make us tired. Even the thought of scheduling a vacation or researching a destination can give us a leap of hope inside us that keeps us going until the special day arrives. Vacations are a place void of phone calls, customer emails, solving problems, dirty dishes, and taking out the garbage. For as long as you like, you can have people wait on you and not have to worry about taking care of everyone else.
When you finally get to your destination, you are hoping for a time different than the one you experience at home. If you are used to house cleaning, your vacation should be one in which you do not have to pull out the vacuum. It should take you out of your natural element, and make you feel as if you have left reality for that short period of time. As you are escaping the real world, energy is renewed. For some, this could mean quality family time, time which is so precious yet so hard to manage when living in a hectic environment. For a husband and wife, it could mean allowing themselves to reconnect after months of quick hellos and kisses on the cheek. For others, it is an escape from the elements, cold winters, rain and shoveling the driveway. You will find these folks sitting on a beach in the tropics, while their counterparts at home are scraping the ice off of their windshields. Even if just for a week, the thought of a vacation is exhilarating enough to hope for the day months in advance.
Whatever your destination, you should get out of the experience what you determine. Every person has a specific reason for going on vacation, and most often they are looking for a well deserved break or change of scenery from the environment in which they live. One thing will always be true, wherever people land they expect to enjoy every moment. What is exciting and energizing for each person will be completely unique. As long as it is enjoyable and you can take some of that life back with you, even if only in your thoughts and memories, then that vacation was a true success which will last in your memory for a lifetime.
