Hilton Head, South Carolina is a popular vacation destination for hundreds of thousands of familes each year. There are some people who, myself included, want a laid back atmosphere to take the family. If that is you, then Hilton Head Island is your place.
There are lots of things you can do on your trip to Hilton Head. Of course you have the beach, which is not crowded at all compared to some of your other famous South Carolina beaches. You have pretty much all you need at Hilton Head.
Hilton Head island’s busiest time of the year is the same as all other vacation destinations. We went the last week in July. It definitely could have been worse. It was not overly crowded for my tastes. I will say the Saturday that we were there was a tad bit more crowded, but that is to be expected. The weekends are always busier.
We have never been there at any other time, but I have been told that sometimes the dining spots will shut down periodically throughout the year just to clean up a bit. If it’s too cold to play around in the water, you can always play golf. If I remember correctly, there are over 20 golf courses around the area, so if you like golf, a Hilton Head Island Vacation is your spot, regardless of the weather.
According to some travel websites, visitors to Hilton Head Island arrive and leave on Saturdays, which probably explains what I mentioned above. It is more crowded on the weekend, especially Saturday. This year we arrived on a Sunday afternoon, which was actually very easy. Traffic was not a problem, and neither was checking in.
Be aware of the regulations at Hilton Head Island. No alcohol on the beach. Don’t think you can get away with having a few brews either. Leave everything living on the beach. Sometimes that can be a challenge with the young ones, some of them would grab sand dollars and starfish that floated up with the tide in the mornings. That is a big no no!
Bicycling is common on Hilton Head, and there are lots of bike paths all over the island. I have never seen so many tourists biking in my entire life….they are spread all over. Especially at the Sea Pines area. There are some good reasons to travel by bicycle, you will have no trouble parking and it’s fantastic exercise. There are plenty of places to rent bicycles.
Hilton Head Island is a special place to take the family on a vacation. I enjoy going there and will continue to do so. It can be a little pricier than some areas, but I think that it is worth it. My whole family enjoys it and I am positive yours will also.
